The government released its much-anticipated green paper on National Health Insurance this week, but details on how your healthcare cover may shape up in future remain blurry. What is certain is that membership of a medical scheme may become an issue of whether or not you can afford it, as well as contributions to NHI.
In my humble opinion, the ANC has bitten off more that it can chew and the biggest losers are going to be the 8.2 million existing members of medical aid schemes.
The green paper says that the services that NHI will cover will be “comprehensive”, but it will not cover everything – for example, expensive dental procedures for aesthetic purposes, expensive spectacle frames, medicines not on the essential drug list and diagnostic procedures beyond certain protocols will be excluded.
We will just have to wait 14 years and see... I certainly hope I don't need much healthcare in my old age!
