Billions of rands in taxpayers’ money has been blown by Eastern Cape
municipalities in unauthorised, irregular and fruitless expenditure in
the 2010/2011 financial year.
It is mostly the smaller municipalities who are the biggest culprits, misspending close to R3-billion.
Makana Municipality – which spent more than R47-million in unauthorised expenditure – tops the list. The Grahamstown-based council, which had an operating budget of R326m in
the last financial year, also blew R10.8m in irregular expenditure,
while a further R2.4m was lost through fruitless and wasteful
expenditure.
Buffalo City Metro tops the list of municipalities with irregular spending, closely followed by O R Tambo DM. BCM misspent R349.3m in irregular expenditure, O R Tambo district R325.4m and KSD R125.9m.
